Callao man charged with burglary, stealing after Lace Avenue incident

A Callao man is facing a felony burglary charge and six additional counts after Macon County deputies reported catching him with items allegedly taken from a rural property on Lace Avenue last week.

Jacob Russell Moore is charged in Macon County Circuit Court with second-degree burglary, a Class D felony, along with four counts of stealing, one count of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and one count of displaying or possessing the license plates of another. The charges were filed June 23 by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Cody Wells.

According to a probable cause statement filed by Macon County Sheriff’s Deputy Jermey Nelson, the incident took place the afternoon of June 22. An off-duty deputy had received a report of a possible burglary in progress, with a silver SUV and two occupants still at the scene.

Nelson wrote that he arrived to find Moore standing beside the vehicle and detained him, in part on two outstanding Linn County warrants for failure to appear. A passenger was also detained; he was released at the scene and trespassed from the property without being charged.

An eyewitness told deputies he had pulled into the driveway, seen a man covering items in the back of the SUV with a tarp, and then blocked the vehicle with his pickup to keep it from leaving, the statement says. Nelson reported that surveillance video from a camera across the road showed the SUV arriving around 5 p.m. and a man later walking from the property’s garage carrying a gas can.

Deputies reported recovering several items belonging to the property owner, including a cordless grinder, gas cans and a cordless tool battery, and returned the property to its owner. The owner’s name is being withheld; court records identify the victim only as confidential.

During a search of the SUV, to which Moore consented, deputies reported finding two glass pipes that later tested positive for methamphetamine in a field test, according to the statement. The paraphernalia count is enhanced based on a prior drug offense.

Moore was booked into the Macon County Jail. A judge set bond at $10,000, cash only. A bond appearance hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 25 before Judge Kristen Dawn Burks.

The charges are allegations. Moore is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
