Ohio man charged after deputy says he fled in stolen car on U.S. 36

A Danville, Ohio, man is charged with two felonies after a Macon County deputy reported chasing a stolen car at up to 85 mph on U.S. Highway 36 on Wednesday, according to Macon County court records.

Noel A. Ward is charged with receiving stolen property, a class D felony, and resisting a lawful stop by fleeing, a class E felony. He also faces two misdemeanors: speeding and driving while his license was suspended.

He is being held on a $25,000 cash only bond.

Macon County Deputy Jeff Stacy wrote in the probable cause statement that he was texted about a license plate reader alert on a stolen brown Chevrolet Malibu with Ohio plates headed west on U.S. 36. Stacy was running radar at the westbound on-ramp at Callao. The Malibu passed him and the car came back as stolen.

Stacy attempted a stop near Eagle Avenue, and the driver did not yield. The statement says the driver held 63 to 65 mph for about a mile, sped up to 74 mph, and reached 85 mph past the New Cambria interchange.

Approaching Highway 129, the driver pulled onto the shoulder, drove west on it about a quarter mile, and stopped. The statement says the driver got out with his hands raised, but fled from Stacy by running in front of the car and up a hill north of the highway.

Two Missouri state troopers joined the search, and one found the man about a quarter mile west near the highway. He was taken into custody and identified as Ward.

Ward is scheduled for a bond appearance hearing at 10 a.m. today before Judge Kristen D. Burks.

According to the complaint, the class D felony carries one to seven years in prison, and the class E felony one to four years.

Charges are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
